I manage to pickup the Transit for a decent price back in 1995, partly adapted. Then got KC Mobility to transfer all my adaptions from my car into it. I had to take my driving test in it. My friend Toby helped me customise the Transit, which we both enjoyed doing. (see pics) After 10 years of driving, it lost a lot of power. and not really having much money, I went down the Motability route and hired a Sprinter. Sounds good but in heinz site, I should had spent money on getting the engine rebuilt and a bit or body work done.
It took over 2 years to convert the Sprinter because the company that I asked Motability to use, went through big changes and the van wasn't touched for well over 10+ months. Then when I did get it, I had a lot of issue with it, from the battery dying after 3 days of not being used, to the foot steering being hard to use, then they lightened it which didn't help. Plus my pedal caught on the underside of the dash, which was scary when I could turn & there's a telephone junction box getting closer! I ended up working with one of my PAs at the time, David. We had a plate made up to bring my foot clamp back so the end of the crank arm was further forward. This sorted that issue but the steering was too light but once you lightened a power steering rack, you can't de-lighten then unless you replace the rack with a new one. After 9 years of having the Sprinter, it was time to change it but knowing that Motability would only offer me a replacement Sprinter van, I decided to hand it back and have my adaptions out of it and go down my own route as I did before, and taking my PIP allowance back.
